CPS Summer Chess Camps

(1 - 5 PM M-F)

beginners to advanced players

Camps are open to all CPS students free of charge

June 16 – 20  Stewart Elementary, 4525 N. Kenmore Ave

July 7 – 11  Coles Language Academy, 8441 S. Yates Blvd

July 14 – 18  Canty Elementary, 3740 N. Panama Ave

Students will receive instruction from Renaissance Knights staff of world class chess educators, whom have vast experience teaching children.   Students will be placed into groups based on ability and age.

The theme of the camps will be endgames.  The ‘Checkmate - Ideas for Students’ curriculum will be featured while emphasizing good sportsmanship.  Instructors will cover the mechanics of the checkmating process in great detail by teaching the tactical motif used to force the mate (attraction, double check, or removal of the guard).

The camp will also feature a special lesson titled ‘Conflict Resolution / Making Wise Decisions’ where the chess board and pieces become a metaphor for situations in life and the way we move them will lead us to success or failure.  This lesson is part of Renaissance Knights new initiative called “Checkmate Violence” where we spotlight the importance of chess as an anti-violence activity.

Campers should wear clothes and shoes appropriate for sports activities.
