"Chess is also extremely beneficial in raising self-esteem, teaching determination, self-motivation and sportsmanship. It's one of the few positive in-school and extra-curricular activities for students of all ages and from all backgrounds. Chess is the one great equalizer in education, in which anyone with determination to succeed can excel."

Excerpt from Benefits of Chess for Youth By GM Gary Karpov

Playing chess has proven to help student improve their critical thinking skills and concentration, boost memory and retention, and achieve superior academic performance.  Additionally, chess has been shown to develop positive life skills, provide cultural enrichment, advance intellectual maturity and enhance self-esteem and good sportsmanship. We know that these are qualities that school administrators, parents, and teachers desire for their students.

Our Chess Sets for Schools program operates under a very simple premise – chess makes kids smarter and should be an opportunity available to all students in Northern Illinois. We can help you establish or continue your school chess program by providing chess playing equipment.  These Programs are carried out in the field by dedicated

volunteers and teachers who give their time and expertise to run chess programs in schools,.

It’s simple to get involved with the Chess Sets for Schools program.   Have a school administrator or principal complete the application, include a brief letter (on official letterhead) stating the request, and send it to the Chess Sets for Schools, Renaissance Knights, PO Box 1074, Northbrook, IL 60065.  We will review your request and if approved, will send up to five free chess sets and boards to support your program.

The foundation also runs the Illinois Scholastic Chess website,
